Spirit of the Yukon – Volunteer extraordinaire Al Foster, who began helping out as a support crew member for Paddlers Abreast.  Seeing a need for more assistance at the Carmacks dock, he stepped up to help several years ago and now leads the crew there and walks us through the procedures at the briefings. His kind approach to working with teams and other volunteers makes him most deserving of this award. (Raven Ink)

 

Top Overall Team – #19 Round Side Down (free entry for captain and team members in 2014 YRQ and name on permanent trophy) first to finish at 7:02 p.m. Friday.

 

RACE NOTES

• 62 teams started the race (67 were registered; 5 teams withdrew or did not start)

• 49 finished; there were 13 scratches (1 end of lake, 11 at Carmacks, 1 at Minto)

• A tandem canoe won the overall title for the first time since 2004.

• Lake Laberge was very calm for second straight year (unusual) and river was high but these conditions did not result in faster times. No records were broken for the first time in many years. The heat this year (plus-30 on Thursday and Friday) slowed all teams, as did thunder and lightning on all parts of the river, and smoke from forest fires. Racers watched one strike a hillside just before the rapids on Thursday night, and others watched fire bombers put it out. Another fire was reported by teams before they arrived at Kirkman Creek. Many teams also encountered rain on Saturday.

• Two teams overturned in the rapids, and two others (1 before Little Salmon, 1 before Fort Selkirk); all carried on after getting to shore and being checked by safety boats. There were no major incidents.
