A friend of mine who I'm sure had no intention of doing such a race,  emailed me the YRQ website address no doubt as a 'hey-look-what-these-poor-bastards-are-going-to-do-to-themselves' kind of a joke, but thus was planted an ugly seed. My goal is to purge myself of this fixation.

Race Goals:
Objectives: to regain full use of our upper bodies; to meet a physical and mental challenge; to prove that we can undertake strenuous exercise without developing lymphedema; to learn to trust our new bodies; and to share a positive experience with other breast cancer survivors. We choose to do this as part of a public event in order to help other women living with breast cancer realize that they, too, can live full and active lives and to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Previous experience:

Yukon River Quest 2001 was the first race for Paddlers Abreast, who were a group of Yukon women living with breast cancer. They had learned about breast cancer survivor's Dragonboat teams across Canada and wanted to challenge themselves similarly by paddling together in a voyaguer canoe from Whitehorse to Dawson City.
